I've already mentioned that Veyil(In february) is the last movie I've seen before 300.Though I've seen half-a-dozen new Tamil films since October 2006,none of them were so 'bad to be condemned'.But this one is something special.Hence writing a review.(First Thamizh film review in this blog.)
Plot:
The film starts with some sword fights.(Just for 1 minute.Bear it.)Then Murugesan(Pasupathy) narrates his tale.
Murugesan and Kathir(Bharath) are brothers.Their father is a buthcher in one village.During his childhood,Murugesan was a mad fan of M.G.R.,so much that he bunks classes to watch his favourite hero's movie.(Probably first day first show.)One day,his teacher observes this and infoems the same to the father. Now,Murugesan gets caught by his father while watching a film in a theatre. Murugesan is punished severely and is humiliated in front of everyone in the village.Unable to bear his father's humiliation,he runs away from the home taking some money and his mother's jewellery.
However, when he arrives in the city,Murugesan finds himself robbed of the valuables he carried from his home. With no other way,he ends up being an operator in a theatre and works there for many years. There,he falls in love with a girl who is his neighbour. However, her parents oppose their love and try to kill Murugesan. Now,she kills herself to save her lover.
A few years pass away. The cinema-hall's audience dwindles day-by-day and one fine day,it is
shut-down.Murugesan has lost his job and lover too.
Meanwhile his brother Kathir grows upto managing a leading ad-agency in his area.He also falls in love with a girl(Bhavana).
With no other option,Murugesan prefers to return to his village. But he is not accepted by his father. However,Kathir treats him well. He's the only peson in the house who cares for im,for even his mother shows bigger affection for Kathir than towards him.His 2 younger sisters too insult him.The only person other than Kathir who treats him well is Pandi(Shreya Reddy),his
childhood friend whose life is affected due to her husband.
Finally,Murgesan gets his due. When and how? That's the rest of the story.
Views:
1.I liked it because I'm very well aware of many guys like Murugesan who die to watch their favourite hero's films' first day first show. Thus it's truly realistic.(Espacially in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.)
2.Someone said that 'Consider the case that having run from home and you or me getting back home after 10-20 years, will our parents reject us?Don't think so.India is a country where even drunkards are supported by their Mom and Dad.'I believe that Murugesan's father would have accepted him if he'd come in a Mercedes Benz wearing a Raymond's suiting. But, how did he come?He departed from a town bus to reach his village and his attire resembled that of a beggar asking for food/shelter.
Towards the end,he's accepted because he achieved one thing.(Would not reveal it.Watch it.)
3.It is not a film which gives a message like the way a father(Here Director/hero) gives to his son(Here fans/audience.).It's rather subtle.(Just like Swathikiranam.)
Positives:
1.Good and a reasonably new story.Heard that it's inspired from Cinema Paradiso. But in the review,I've seen that its plot is about the memoirs of a filmmaker about the cinema hall in his village and his experiences, here it's about a loser who was a filmbuff during his younger days and there's no description of different 'classes' of audiences mentioned in this film.
2.Direction was very smooth.No artificial sentiments,though it's a tale of 2 brothers.
3.Pasupathy's acting.
4.Good music.
Negatives:
1.Story is a bit too simple. It does not have 'great moments'.That's it.No other complaint.
Rating:7 out of 10(By imdb standard.) or 3.25*(By Balaji standard.)That is it's highly watchable.

Good review Ganesh. Very well written with the plot being given preference ahead of the execution style! Very interesting story and I like the starcast a lot. Bharath and Bhavana are two actors I feel will really be the guiding lights for Tamil cinema in the future.
No word about the music, cinematography, editing, screenplay or performances of the actors?
//No word about the music, cinematography, editing, screenplay or performances of the actors?//
I've mentioned that music is good and Pasupathy's acting is also good.
Actually,story's more important.
Rest just help it look very good.
(Isn't it ideal cinema?)
As for the others(Editing etc.),I'm not grown up enough too analyze such things.

Sorry.Even Bharath is there only for his 'star value'.Pasupathy is the actual hero. That's why I've mentioned only about his acting and not that of others.
Forgot to mention.Direction was very smooth. No artificial sentiments.
Forgot to mention. The music director G.V.Prakash is A.R.Rehman's nephew.(Seems to have it in his genes,as BGM music is very good.)3 songs are very good.
I felt the review might become too lengthy.Hence, forgot to mention many things.
Must say good movies inspire me to write good reviews.(If I can believe your words.)As my earlier reviews for KANK,Troy etc. were really bad.
Hi Ganesh ..Veyil definitely takes inspiration from cinema paradiso...but inspirations are not bad..it only becomes bad when u delibertely attempt to distort the whole image so as to differentiate it from its original..a clear example can be that in cinema paradiso the protagonist is shown a winner and in veyil he is shown a all loser...veyil by standrads like pasupathy's bharat's acting & cinematographic excellence(being true to the script) definitely scores to be a good movie..but miles behind in the sense of taking tamil movie to world league....now being featured in cannes will also not helpit to be one of that kind...also if interested u can read my views about cinema paradiso in my blogspace
haven't seen Veyil. Wasn't invited to Cannes... lolzzzz:)
But seriously, I intend to watch it soon. Happened to watch Parithiviran and loved it.
